Who says board games are boring?

WHILE commuting from work, I stumbled upon this 12-year-old girl who sat in front of me. I got curious on what was in her loot bag, which reminded me a lot of my childhood when I saw a glimpse of a toy inside. In it was this very interesting board game that rekindled old memories I had as a kid. Surprisingly, I was able to check the Internet if these other board games still exist with the emergences of computer–based games in different gadgets such as tablets, mobile phones and desktop PCs that can be downloaded for a small fee or for free nowadays. You can see the youth playing for hours on “Defense of the Ancients (DOTA),” “Counterstrike” on the neighborhood Internet cafés or computer shops or even young adults and professionals busy with their mobile phones or tablets playing “Clash of Clans (COC),” “Candy Crush” and more inside the bus or even on jam-packed Metro Rail Transit/Light Rail Transit on their way to work or going home.

GUEST POST: Throwback Thursday: Money Saving Lessons From Lolo and Lola

On this guest post, we invited Mr.Kyle Kam of MoneyMax Philippines to give us some insight on how our grandparents were in their personal finance.

Before there was online banking and smartphone apps that let you track your expenses anytime, anywhere; long before there were websites that let you compare vehicle insurance and financial products in an instant, our lolos and lolas had their own way of saving money. If you ever paid attention to your grandparents back when you were young, they might have taught you these money saving tricks that still hold true in this day and age.

Let’s take a look at some actual money saving lessons shared by the lolos and lolas of friends around the office.

MARCH TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM

“There is no substitute for victory – Gen. Douglas MacArthur”

April 9 was “Araw ng Kagitingan” or “Day of Valor” as we celebrate and honor our veterans and remember the fallen of World War II and other battles and conflicts in our history who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country and for the people.  Looking back, my late grandmother would tell us stories of how our late grandfather’s escape with a few of his comrades during the infamous Bataan Death March.

They were able to escape and hide through the help of the townsfolk they knew during the transfer of the bulk of prisoners of war in the historic San Fernando Train Station in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga to be shipped to Camp O’ Donnell in Capas, Tarlac through railway by their Japanese captors. He was a young army officer of the Philippine Commonwealth Army then. Although he died four decades ago, I still recount what my grandmother and some of the old folks we know who lived during the Japanese occupation years as a very harsh period in our Philippine history.

Teaching them Young

A month ago, the Department of Education and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas through their joint program, Guro ng Pag-Asa, awarded four public elementary-school teachers in the country in recognition of their effort at instilling the youth with the basics of personal finance and entrepreneurship under this program. It was also good to hear that they were given cash incentives for these effort, as well.

Personal finance has come a long way in the past decade with information and ideas on investing and handling personal finance and money management. The recent development excites in that they are teaching the basics in public elementary schools around the country. But back in the days, there was not much information on personal finance and it was a concept I had a few years ago.

Running and Financial Planning

Running has become a popular sport among the young and old alike. This sport had seen tremendous interest for the the past few years, with droves of people participating in such number of running events in the country and other places worldwide. The running craze has hit the Philippine shores with many of our citizens had become aware with health benefits and consciousness of being healthy and the awareness of living better. Nowadays, running is trending with with almost every weekend that there are running events on Saturdays and Sundays, there are competitive also races from half marathon to triathlon events happening in Metro Manila or somewhere in the Philippines. Such events are organized by social groups to corporate entities looking on marketing their latest products and services for commercial purposes or to worthy causes that is socially and environmentally relevant and can create impact today.

In any case how does running and financial planning have in common?

I like the analogy of running and personal finance it has simple rules to follow. Running is easy to do but going an extra mile would require a lot of trials along the way. A person intending to engage in this sport must be physically and mentally trained in this type of physical sport. Sharing my sentiments on this sport, I have been running for sometime now and participated in short distance running mostly 2.5 Kilometer to 5 kilometer runs in the past. We know for a fact they are both different in a sense but there are lot of lessons I learned from these two different disciplines.

When Disasters Strikes (Earthquakes, Floods, Fire and others)

It’s been a few months since we have seen and experience number of natural disasters, man-made catastrophes and armed conflict from the second half of 2013. From Typhoons like Santi, Labuyo, Maring, Zamboanga Rebellion, 7.2 magnitude earthquake of Bohol and Cebu Islands and lastly the Super typhoon of Yolanda (International Name: Haiyan). These incidents have made a great impact and consciousness in the minds of many to prepare for any disasters in the near future or unforeseen circumstances. In one statement of Dr. Marqueza Reyes of Earthquake and Mega-cities Initiative during an interview at ANC (ABS-CBN News Channel) that the "Typhoon Yolanda will be benchmark for disaster preparedness in the years to come" if there will any more Category 5 storms coming in the archipelago.

Understanding the Philippine Stock Market

Updated: February 13, 2014: 12:00 pm

The second half of 2013 was a thrilling event for those who invested their money in stock market making tremendous profit with this type of direct investments. Many have gone up and seen the rise of the Philippine Stock Exchange  Index (PSEi) to 7,000 mark with people celebrating in sheer numbers to see their money grow.  However, stocks have seen downside when profit taking took place in end of December 2013 days before Christmas time but surely I am optimistic about this and looking forward on a better this year 2014.

Many people ask this question on how to invest in the stock market and why invest in the stock market? How much can a stock or equity profit?

Facing on Disasters: Incorporating Financial Planning and Emergency Preparedness

On the second half of 2013, we have seen and experience tumultuous numbers of natural disasters, man-made catastrophe typhoons, armed conflicts brought about by political and ideological indifferences, and earthquakes. These incidents have inculcated in the minds of many how to these disaster may it be man-made or caused Mother Nature have devastated and cause disruption on our lives and our daily routines. In one statement made by an disaster and risk management expert on TV that the "Typhoon Yolanda will be benchmark for disaster preparedness in the years to come" if there will any more Category 5 storms coming in the archipelago.

The tragedy of these events made a deep impact to the consciousness and minds of Filipinos. Seeing the extent of damage is overwhelming for our local and national government in which it is already overburdened and limited resources are stretched to the limit. With aid coming the private sector and international relief pouring in as well to help mitigate the needs of these affected folks.

Still Have No Money? : A Short Overview of Personal Finance.

A few weeks ago, I was browsing this popular Filipino website and forum which is full of anonymous people from all walk of life sharing their thoughts and insights in this social network. In my curiosity, I checked the personal finance thread that is full of different credit card applications topics, how to get loans etc. but not much on financial literacy topics such as business or entrepreneurship, proper money management thread in which I am a bit saddened.

There is one particular wherein a guy in his 30s has a dilemma on what is happening with his current personal finance.  The thread starter has zero (0) savings, no investments and may have little or no knowledge of handling money at all as I presume. He has been asking and receiving advices from people or strangers and I eventually read their posts of these anonymous people who are actively discussing that thread on how to properly money management and finances wherein they have given their insights about the topic which I considered somehow helpful and I participated and engaged in the discussion and expressed my opinions on that thread just to help gentleman who needs the advice.
There are factors that an average Juan or Pedro would not know. Let get the facts straight on what is happening on every day Filipinos the following are outlined below:

What I have learned in Football and Financial Planning

What I have learned in Football and Financial Planning

By: Benedict F. Baluyut

Being a one of the Football Managing Staff and Financial Planner are both different things and aspects. Both professions have similarities that can be applied in realistically. This in hand can be useful in many ways of motivating oneself to reach its potentials and goals in life.

Football or Soccer has become a passion for me after rediscovering it again in 2010. I haven’t played a major 11-aside tournament after leaving high school and proceeding to college more than a decade ago. Other than running and badminton, this sport have become my outlet recently in relieving stress, renewed motivation to exercise and be fit and meeting with old and new friends who shared the same passion as well.

I learned how to play the sport at age 11 in early 1990s. It was fun time of learning the basics of football. In football playing countries learning the sport at age 11 is already old but I started to pick it up at that age and stayed away from playing basketball at the moment and become one of the Euro football fan (from Dutch and Italian Serie A) and recently with English Premiere League, Spain’s La Liga, German Bundesliga and our very own United Football League Philippines.

Protecting against losses

Author: Benedict F. Baluyut

Published at: Monday, September 3, 2012 on Business Mirror

IT has been wet and rainy for a couple of days now and not seeing much sunshine.
A few weeks after the devastation brought about by recent typhoon Helen and monsoon rains (“hanging habagat”) that major portions of the Luzon area and Metro Manila were severely affected. People are slowly recovering from the recent disasters that pummeled the island of Luzon and affected the populace. As I remember back then, it has been raining very hard and almost all day. Everything happening on those days was grounded to a halt with floods affecting the flow of traffic, schools and business establishments temporarily closed and people worried on their lives and properties on what to do next and how to get on their previous life on track again.

Floods, typhoons and other disasters

MANY of the known areas where flooded and a great majority of people got stuck in their second floor of their homes or at their rooftops for those living in bungalows. Local government units have mostly declared their municipalities, cities and provinces under state of calamity. These provinces and major cities are located in flood map areas of the country. It was good that the population and the government are prepared from these disasters in which Typhoon Ondoy served as a lesson for most of us and a basis on what things may come in the future with the rapid climate change and destruction, depletion of our natural resources and improper waste segregation and management in which we the ordinary people should be aware of.

Major government and non-government agencies come prepared and gone along way on their risk reduction and disaster management operation in the recent calamities after 2009 with faster response time. There have been some problems encountered during rescue and evacuation but still people living in the flood hazards zone are resilient and instead stay behind on their homes because they have sentimental value of the things they are going to leave behind and were just asking for relief goods other opted to temporarily evacuate on higher grounds or shelters provided by the local government units.

Typhoon Ondoy caused damage to property estimated at P6 billion, including P4.1 billion in damage to infrastructure, P1.9 billion in damage to schools, and P882.525 million in damage to agriculture. Typhoon Helen and the southwest monsoon caused damage of more than P3 billion worth of infrastructure and agricultural loss, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in September 2009 and August 2012 reports.

Our country, the Philippines, is no exception to natural and manmade disasters because it sits on the center path of major tropical storms coming in from the Western Pacific Ocean and more than 20 or so typhoons can come across our archipelago in a year and so the need for Non-life and life insurance is greatly needed in such times of need.

What are non-life insurance and life insurance?
To give you a brief background on life and non-life insurance, non-life insurance is defined as insurance for property and casualty and is specialized on different categories in order to customize the needs of the policyholder.

Many non-life insurance companies can give different package from fortuitous events such Fire insurance to other allied peril insurance such as flood /typhoon, earthquake in which these are specialized insurance products. They can also have extended coverage from burglary, valuable items protection, riot, smoke, and others that are offered from these non-life insurance. Sometimes these non-life insurance providers can also include life insurances package such as hospitalization, personal accident, and personal liability for those who avail this.
Life insurance provides a monetary benefit to a decedent’s family or other designated beneficiary, and may specifically provide for income to an insured person’s family, burial, funeral and other final expenses.

People think that insurance is just a waste of money but in can work a lot of ways of helping the policyholders in which insurance is defined as the equitable transfer of the risk of a loss, from one entity to another, in exchange for payment. Insurance is a form of risk management primarily used to hedge against the risk of a contingent, uncertain loss.
Other types of insurances are crop and livestock insurance (agricultural / aquaculture), motor vehicle insurance, mortgage redemption insurances (real estate) and many others.
Life and non-life Insurance can both work hand in hand and could be a useful tool in protecting yourself against unfortunate events such as what happened a few weeks ago.

In choosing the right Insurances for your needs, the providing company must be registered and abide by the rules and regulation set forth by the Insurance Commission of the Philippines. The Insurance Commission’s mandate is to regulate and supervise the insurance industry in accordance with the provisions of the Insurance Code in order to ensure that adequate insurance protection is available to the public at a fair and reasonable cost and to assure the financial stability of the insurance industry so that all legitimate claims of the insuring public are met promptly and equitably.

For those interested to avail of insurance, you can check out the website of the Insurance Commission if the insurance companies offering you are legitimate and also to better shop around and research first for the ideal insurance products that fits your need before selecting and deciding the right one for you.

Amidst the hardships and anxiety, resiliency and the “bayanihan” spirit still exists
It proves that “The Filipino spirit is waterproof” as what was circulated in the social media networks like Twitter and Facebook two weeks ago. The resiliency and spirit of helping others have been seen among ordinary citizens who are willing to risk their lives for others. The fortunate souls who were not affected were able to give the affected and those in need the help and relief with their unwavering support and gracious hearts.

It was also a time even in these disasters that people of various walks of life affected from this tragedy have high hopes and still learn to smile and be happy in order to cope up with the extremes weather condition we are experiencing and eventually triumph from it.

It's official: I am a Registered Financial Planner.

It was ecstatic moment for me to receive my certificate as a full pledged Registered Financial Planner last March 19, 2012. It felt great after a few years of being inactive and been plain busy with life, career, sports and other extra curricular activities.

I eventually got the idea of registering myself as an Registered Financial Planner (RFP) last December 2011 after the christmas break. Have been thinking a lot of times with this well thought idea if I indeed need to sign up and so I did and on January 27, 2012 on the Personal Branding Seminar by J. Randell Tiongson on the Continuing Professional Education Series as a requirement for RFP at the RFP Office in Tektite Bldg Ortigas, Pasig City I signed my papers and paid the one year payment dues.

Joining the ranks of this rising profession and where the advocacy of financial planning coming about with the awakening and consciousness of fellow Filipinos who are looking to save, earn and learn in the process but coming to think of I need to apply what I learned in the seminar 4 years ago plus relearn and rethink my plans and strategies in the future.

Last night, I made my decision of signing up on advocacy on work place plan by RFP Philippines and I am very happy of the thoughts of helping people and at the same time giving some sense of hope for a fellow by reaching out to their needs in educating them about on topics about Debt and Credit Management, Future investments, Goal setting etc. I feel reluctant of joining the program from the 10th Batch which was in April 2008 and it did reallu open my eyes on the reality of it all and having the purpose and direction in my life as well of saving and planning for the future.

It is an honor and privilege to be a part of this team.

Even in Death you will still be paying!

I once read a rticle online through Manila Times that was published a few months ago a write up on one memorial p ark and funeral home. For many, it was a unbelievably dissatisfying for some readers who eventually are surprised about this in facing the grim reality when a loved one dies. Although, the misery are still there with the immediate family still be grieving for the loss of a loved ones, I ask this question, are you prepared if anything happens to you and if you depart this physical world and move on to the after life?
It is so ironic that even in death you still have to pay a lot of this material things such as Debts, medical expenses, educational expenses for the children, estate tax and such that it is burdensome to think about it on how this can happen to you. Life Insurance and Mortgage Redemption Insurances are your best protection in case circumstances suchs illnesses, accidents and others to leave something for your loved. However, the best way to plan ahead it to create an estate plan which requires the services of an estate planner, lawyer and accountants in customizing your subdividing the properties if ever unexpected events happen in your life such as death.

Me at Moneysense!

Finally, I never thought that my case study in financial planning will be featured and published at Moneysense magazine's September and October 2010 at page. I feel very surprised that my name was there and that I have finally broken the ice of being a frustrated writer into a budding  idealist. The case was quite unique in using my older brother as my model and that my boyhood dream of becoming a French Foreign Legionnaire would be quite useful.

Other than my work, this magazine features some articles featuring Retirement for Baby Boomers, Expert Advice by Efren Ll. Cruz and many more. Although, the copies of this magazine are very limited in provincial areas, there are some major bookstores who are selling copies at PhP 150.00. So I suggest that If you want to see my work, get one and buy a copy now.

I feel honored and privileged to be featured here at the Money makeover page for RFP. I am very much pleased and happy with the outcome of case I have been studying and writing for the two years when I submitted it to Ms. Paula the coordinator of RFP Philippines last April 2010.

What's for me in the future? probably writing articles in a major business dailies and will still  definitely continue writing and blogging.

Want to Get Out of the Rat race? Read This! (Part 1)

It was an eye opener for me when I attended the recently concluded Money Summit and Wealth Expo courtesy of the Learning Curve, Inc. Jerome San of Rich Dad Asia / Millionaire Mind Asia talked about the Robert Kiyosaki principles on the book Rich Dad's Guide to Investing  which I did missed to read back a few years but I did read the first two books Rich Dad ,Poor Dad and Rich Dad's Cashflow Quadrant back in early 2008 and played the Cashflow 101 game during one event with Larry Gamboa's Think Rich Pinoy in  early 2009.

Jerome discussed some of the historical fact and timeline on how job started back in the age of  Age of Discovery starting from 1400s and how it affects the modern age with major changes on how companies would compensate their employees after working for them in a decades after retiring from their old job. He made some comparative notes on the way companies are compensating their employees which greatly affects a lot of people.

Reaching your goal of becoming financial independent and free from debts requires a lot of discipline, sacrifices, motivation and right entrepreneurial mindset to reach the dreams anyone would one to achieve in the near future in which conceptualizing, building and running a business and later the business system will run itself is the only option of becoming a rich person eventually leading to being an investor with focus of furthering the business and seek more investments as well.

To be continued on the next post....

Financial Planning Tips for Fresh College Graduates | Things to Remember.

So you landed on your first job and you finished college a few months ago with sheer luck of finding your ideal job in the many companies and job fair you had attended, participated and applied with. Now that you are in the real world and out of the four corners of the classrooms from your alma mater. I congratulate you for stepping out of your comfort zone and becoming a more mature person on taking the responsibilities of finding employment even if it is a temporary or permanent job that you applied to for yourself or your family.

You are very excited on your first "sweldo" or salary as a trainee on the company that hired you even if it is just enough for a single person. But let me ask you something, can you survive without asking for your parents for extra money? Yes it is possible, when working out a budget plan and being frugal would be ideal training experience for being independent from your parents. But parents are still willing to help you on feet and spare some cash on your first few months at work till you are already receiving your monthly sweldo. It will be hard fought decisions of weighing the pros and cons of needs and wants. There is nothing wrong in sipping a one cup of Starbucks coffee once a week ore watch a  very good movie with your friends but if you do this often like everyday after work you will eventually end up a hole in your wallet or pocket with your cash out flowing to expenses in which but in economic sense, spending encourages economic activity in the market. It is also a big compliment to your parents once you received your first sweldo with your family as long as you treat them on a modest restaurant or buy a carry out food that is within your budget.

1. Change your mindset - It is ideal for young people to rethink and reprogram about their understanding on money. At school, we were never taught about principles of personal investing but think again of re-educating yourself about personal finance.
2. Create a budget plan - This one is a very hard discipline to follow and it requires a lot of planning and monitoring on your spending on the next 15 days before your salary runs out.
3. Open a bank account - Better to start up opening a bank account with booklet not the ATM type of account because you might end up spending your money. This is just the beginning of building your cash reserves in times of emergency.
4. Save a percentage of your earnings - Once, you open that booklet bank account. You better start saving some of your cash. Let say you earn about PhP 12,000.00 per month net, you can start by PhP 500.00 to PhP 1,000.00. When you get used to the regimen of saving that 500 to 1,000 pesos then increase to a much bigger amount like 1,500 pesos to 2,000.00 pesos.
5. Stay away from temptations - There are lots of temptation around, for women shopping is one reason they get indebted without thinking then feeling guilty at the end. Men also have lots of temptation from vices that are unproductive and destructive. There is nothing wrong in joining up for a night  of a festive mood and you are feeling that party swing. Yet you can go out as long you have done careful study and plan on the cash you will be spending as long as you stick with your budget limit.
6. Be open minded - Keep learning, read new books on personal finance investments or attend enriching seminars which can be useful in the near future. If you need advise from a financial advisor or consultant seek help immediately.
7. Dreams have deadlines - Remember that every dreams have deadlines in which goals should be accomplished on a given timetable. From setting your career, buying your first car or owning a new gadget etc.
I know that some of us have dreams of becoming big and live a care free life but then again we face the reality that high maintenance lifestyle is not feasible unless you are ultra rich person but if you study the cases of celebrities, their lives become miserable and desperate.

A responsible youth  is mature enough in their minds with high hopes and dream even if reality bites in that it will be a long hard campaign to succeed. Being frugal is the start if you want to reap the fruits of your labor in the future.  Don't forget that losing that glimmer of hope can make you pessimistic about your life, your job and career.
